08/09/10 Relay has been
cancelled for 2010.
We regret that the Relay has
been cancelled for 2010. We have taken this step in order to focus all our
efforts this year on the 50k and 50 mile ultramarathons.
A major goal of the Can Lake 50 has been to grow the event into a major
destination race, drawing significant numbers of new visitors to this region
and making a contribution to the success of the Finger Lakes region as a
destination for sports tourism. It is now clear that this is the year when
the event finally approaches fulfilling that goal. With two months before
registration closes, we already have more entries that we have had in any
prior year. We have entries from as far away as Oregon, California, Texas,
Florida and Mexico… 16 states and 2 countries so far.
The entry mix is also unprecedented… a majority of the entrants so far
will be running doing their first ultramarathon. We know from prior
experience that new ultrarunners will require additional support both before
and during the race.
With an outlook of having two or three times the number of ultra runners
this year over any prior year, we have decided we must focus all of our time
and energy on ensuring these runners have a successful first ultra
experience and will go home telling their running friends about the
wonderful time they had in the Finger Lakes.
We realize you may have been planning to run the Relay this year and will
be disappointed with our decision to cancel the Relay. We have enjoyed
putting on the Relay for the past seven years and appreciate the support of
every team that has accepted the challenge of running 50 miles around the
lake. We hope you will understand our decision to focus this year on the
success of the Can Lake 50 as a destination race.
