Relay Categories / Rules / Tips

Team Relay Categories (minimum of 2, maximum of 5 members)
Note:  Teams don't have to have five runners to excel.  Since 2004, the relay has been won once by a two-runner team and twice by a three-runner team.

Open Teams - any mix of ages so long as the average age on race day is less than 40.0 years
bullet

Open Men -- all men

bullet

Open Women -- all women

bullet

Open Mixed -- at least 40% women, e.g., 2 women & 3 men, 2 women & 2 men, 2 women & 1 man, etc.

Masters Teams - any mix of ages so long as average age on race day is 40.0+ years.
bullet

Masters Men -- all men

bullet

Masters Women -- all women

bullet

Masters Mixed -- at least 40% women and all age 40 & over

Note 1:  We will add a Veteran (average age 50.00+) category if we get two or more teams in that age range.

Note 2: Any mixed team without the required minimum percentage of women will compete in the corresponding Men's category. For example, a team with 4 men and 1 woman will compete against the Open Men or Masters Men.

Safety Rules & Relay Rules

All of the roads on the race route will be open to traffic. Watch for traffic and be careful at all turns and road crossings. Late in the race when you are tired, remember to be extra careful as your judgment and reaction times will be impaired by fatigue. Flagrant and/or repeat violations of the following rules will result in disqualification of the relay team:

bullet

Runners must run on the left side of the road facing oncoming traffic unless otherwise directed.

bullet

Cross other roads where indicated and follow instructions of Road Marshals and other Race Officials.

bullet

Team vehicles will display a unique identifying sign provided by the Race Director.

bullet

Teams may provide aid to any runners (on their team, other teams or solo runners).

bullet

Teams must not drive along side the runners.  Park at a safe place on the right side of the road, safely cross the road and hand off drink, food or clothing to the runner.  No parking on the left side of the road!

bullet

At exchange points, follow the parking instructions in the Race Handbook and any instructions of the Aid Station volunteers.

bullet

Every team member must run at least 2 relay legs and finish both legs he or she starts. Teams will determine among themselves which legs members will run.

bullet

Teams must change runners at each exchange point.  That is, team members cannot run two consecutive legs.

bullet

The timing chip must be worn on leg 10 so the team receives an official finish time.

bullet

No littering.  Each aid station will have a trash bag for your use.  Any team caught littering will be disqualified.

Although we have adequate aid stations, we strongly recommend runners carry a water bottle if temperatures exceed 70 degrees.

If the weather forecast will be for High or Extreme Heat Risk, teams will be advised of the risk and advised to slow their pace and stress hydration. The Race Director reserves the right to modify the event in case of High or Extreme Heat Risk or the forecast of an electrical storm within the race course area during the time of the race.

Race Day Procedures

bullet

Race Day Check-In - All teams must pick up their timing chip at Finger Lakes Community College on race day before the start.

bullet

Relay Start - Race start is 8:30 AM.

bullet

Timing Chip - The timing chip only needs to be worn on leg 10 so the team receives an official finish time.  The timing chip is not needed for any other legs of the relay.  Turn in the timing chip at the Finish at Finger Lakes Community College.

bullet

Team Vehicle - Each team must provide its own transportation during the race. Teams are strongly encouraged to use only one vehicle.

Relay Race Team Tips

Click here for Ted Thull's tips on how to run a multi-stage relay.  Additional tips from the race director follow below:
bullet

Pick people who will be fun to be with for the day. You will have lots of time to talk and get to know each other better.

bullet

After you have recruited your team, give some thought to which team member should run each leg. The relay has 10 legs of varying length and difficulty.
bullet

Legs 1 and 6 together total 14.7 miles with no major climbs or descents. Assign this slot to a runner who is fast on the flats with good pacing sense and endurance.

bullet

Legs 2 and 7 total 7.6 miles with two climbs and descents. Pick a runner with happy knees and good downhill running skills.

bullet

Legs 3 and 8 total only 6.0 miles but include the challenging Bopple Hill climb, which almost everyone walks, and the more moderate climb to the top of Bare Hill Road. Pick a good climber.

bullet

Legs 4 and 9 total 10.2 miles.  There is a substantial descent on leg 4. Assign this slot to a runner who is comfortable running long down hills and fast on the flats.

bullet

Legs 5 and 10 are relatively long at 12.0 miles total and are mostly flat. Leg 5 is flat to gently rolling roads.  Leg 10 gently trends down until the final steep drop into the college.  Assign this slot to another fast runner with good pacing sense and endurance.

bullet

Note:  Other creative mixes of legs for each team member are fine so long as there is a change of runner at each exchange point and every team member runs two legs minimum.

bullet

Competitive teams may want to pre-run the more challenging sections before race day.

bullet

Captains of less competitive teams may want to coach their runners to use the same techniques that the solo runners use: walk the ups and run a comfortable pace on the downs.

Rest Rooms & Showers
bullet

Restrooms and showers are located at the Start/Finish.

bullet

Restrooms are available at Onanda Park and at the Church in Middlesex.

bullet

There is the woods beside the road.
